Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav jointly addressed election meetings at Hajipur assembly constituency in Bihar on Monday. This is the first time in 23 years that the men, who were bitter rivals until recently, have shared a stage. They are part of a "grand alliance" with the Congress that will look to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party in 10 assembly by-polls slated for August 21.
Maharashtra: Nearly 4,000 petrol pumps go on strike
Approximately 4,000 petrol pumps across Maharashtra, except those in Mumbai city, were shut on Monday because of a day-long strike by petrol and diesel pump dealers. They have complained of substantial losses due to double taxation by the state government and municipal bodies. “The dealers have been complaining about loss of sales due to payment of sales tax, value-added tax, octroi, local body tax, export local body tax and state specific charge," said Ravi Shinde, a member of Petrol Dealers Association.
Uttar Pradesh: RSS workers will tie rakhis to prevent ‘love jihad’
An affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in Uttar Pradesh called the Dharma Jagran Manch on Sunday launched a week-long campaign to tie rakhi bands on Hindu girls, as part of their campaign against so-called love jihad. They allege that Muslim men are waging a love jihad by courting Hindu girls and then getting them to covert to Islam. Each RSS worker was asked to tie rakhis to 100 girls by the end of the week, the organisation said.
Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal tells party workers to get ready for polls in December
Aam Aadmi Party chief, Arvind Kejriwal has told party workers to prepare in earnest for elections in Delhi, which he said are likely to be held in December. In a Google Hangout session on Sunday, where he addressed party workers online, Kejriwal asked volunteers to begin door-to-door campaigns across the Capital to ask residents whether they want elections immediately. Delhi has been under governor’s rule since January.
Odisha: Death toll due to floods rises up to 45
Despite receding water levels in Odisha, the numbers of deaths in the state rose to 45 on Monday from 37 on Sunday. The number of people displaced has also risen to 32.9 lakhs from 28.58 lakhs on Sunday. Even though water levels have receded on the Mahanadi river, over 4.8 lakh people from 460 villages continue to remain marooned in its delta region.
